Our Story
When choosing a travel company, whether for a simple journey or a once-in-a-lifetime experience, experience and continuity matter.
Kompas Express has been operating continuously for over 50 years, adapting to every major shift in the travel industry while remaining true to its core values. The fact that we are still here today, serving both individual travellers and travel professionals, reflects a long-standing commitment built over generations, and a reputation founded on integrity, consistency, and trust.
Our roots in travel, however, go back even further. The story begins in December 1949, when two European university graduates established the first chapter of what would eventually become an international travel presence, with operations in both Europe and the Americas.
Today, while much of the industry has moved entirely online, we remain a real, established company behind our digital services — with people, offices, and decades of hands-on experience.
Our Roots
Our family’s involvement in travel began in 1949 in Caracas, under the name Transmundial.
The company expanded rapidly during the golden era of sea travel, opening offices in major European ports such as Genoa and Trieste, and later establishing a presence in North America, including Toronto and Montreal.
In 1955, the business evolved into Transworld, and later into World Travel Service (WTS), with headquarters in Toronto. For over two decades, WTS operated from its main office at College and Spadina, serving a diverse and loyal clientele.
During this period, the company also played an active role in chartering passenger air services between North America and Europe — an activity that would later continue under Kompas Express.
Expansion and Evolution
The late 1960s and early 1970s marked a period of significant growth for World Travel Service.
In addition to its retail operations, the company developed a wholesale charter division to Europe. Early transatlantic flights were operated using aircraft such as the Douglas DC-6, followed by Boeing 707 services in cooperation with carriers including Adria Aviopromet and JAT Yugoslav Airlines.
These seasonal weekly operations connected North America to a range of European destinations, while group travel programs continued to expand using scheduled airlines.
Following the sale of WTS, Kompas Express was founded in December 1973, with its office on Bloor Street in downtown Toronto.
As the industry evolved, so did the company. Charter operations transitioned fully to jet aircraft, including the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8. In response to increasing competition in the mid-1970s, Kompas Express diversified its airline partnerships, working with carriers such as Quebecair, Nationair Canada, and Worldways Canada.
Charter services to Central and Eastern Europe continued successfully into the early 1980s, when travellers increasingly shifted toward scheduled air travel.
The Spanish Years
From the early 1980s through 2000, Kompas Express played a significant role in promoting Spain as a destination in the Canadian market.
Working closely with Iberia Airlines and the Spanish Tourist Office, the company developed a wide range of travel programs, including both group and tailor-made itineraries.
A key moment came with Iberia’s introduction of direct charter flights from Toronto to Málaga and Madrid, where Kompas Express was among the original contracting partners. This period also marked the expansion of our tailor-made travel services, with increasing demand from independent travellers.
Over time, Iberia’s operations evolved into scheduled year-round service, and Kompas Express remained a consistent partner throughout.
During these years, the company also established strong relationships with other European carriers, including KLM and Air France.
The Austrian Years
In the early 2000s, Kompas Express developed a strong focus on Austria and Central Europe through partnerships with Austrian Airlines, the Vienna Tourist Board, and the Austrian National Tourist Office.
During this period, we introduced the “Incredible Getaways” program, designed to offer accessible and flexible travel options, particularly during off-peak seasons.
Vienna served as the gateway for a wide range of customized itineraries, combining cultural experiences with regional travel throughout Austria and neighbouring countries.
These programs were supported by long-standing local partnerships, allowing us to offer experiences that extended beyond standard tourism.
Italy: Villa Stays and Custom Travel
Well before villa rentals became widely known in Canada, Kompas Express developed a Tuscany program focused on countryside properties and self-drive itineraries.
Through partnerships with local agencies in Tuscany and Umbria, travellers were able to stay in carefully selected homes while exploring regions such as Florence, Siena, and Rome at their own pace.
Over time, our expertise expanded across all of Italy, supported by a strong network of local contacts. This allowed us to create tailored itineraries in regions including Piemonte, Puglia, Liguria, Emilia-Romagna, and the Veneto-Friuli area.
The “Book” Years
A collaboration between Kompas Express, media partners, and tourism organizations led to the development of a series of projects known as the “Book” publications.
These were high-quality, large-format brochures combining editorial content with destination marketing, distributed across selected international markets.
At a time when digital media was still emerging, these publications offered a more immersive and creative approach to travel promotion, focusing on culture, cuisine, and local identity.
Titles such as BookSpain, BookCibo, BookPiemonte, and BookVienna became widely recognized within the industry.
Our Dubai Years and Beyond
In 2011, Emirates Airline entrusted Kompas Express with the fulfillment of its Dubai Stopover program for Canada.
This marked an important step in the company’s expansion into the Middle East and led to the development of dedicated systems to manage stopover bookings efficiently.
In 2014, this role was extended to the United States, further strengthening our position in this segment.
At the same time, growing demand for tailor-made Dubai travel led to the creation of DubaiStop, a dedicated platform for independent travellers.
Dubai’s global connectivity and strategic location continue to make it a key focus for our future development, supported by ongoing partnerships and local expertise.
Special Interest Travel
Kompas Express has long worked with both individual travellers and institutions to design specialized travel programs.
Among these are collaborations with organizations such as the Art Gallery of Ontario (Travel AGO) and the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM Travel), where the focus is on culturally driven itineraries.
These programs often include access to locations, events, and experiences not typically available through standard travel arrangements, made possible through our network of local partners.
Press & Recognition
Over the years, Kompas Express travel programs have been featured in major Canadian publications and media.
Coverage has highlighted the company’s approach to travel design, including Tuscany villa stays, cultural programs in Vienna and Salzburg, and itineraries in destinations such as Puglia and Slovenia.
Publications such as The Globe and Mail and The Toronto Star have recognized the company’s emphasis on thoughtful, experience-driven travel.
